when you had to fill up your tax declaration form for your employer (University), did you tick the checkbox "I am an Australian resident fro tax purposes?"?

I do not remember that I've filled that form. I definitely filled the contract with my supervisor and nothing more. They had to know that anyway as I'm a student enrolled for more then 6 months in this Uni!
And also, I checked the website http://ato.gov.au/individuals/content.asp?...590&mfp=001. According to it, even if I'm non-resident I have to pay 29 cents per 1 dollar if my income is less than 34000, it's 29 percents, but not 47!
And if I'm resident my income below 6000$ is not the subject of taxation at all.

thats the problem: "I do not remember that I've filled that form" ...

they must have filled everything for you... check the ATO resource from my post: http://australia-ru.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3283 ...

you have to contact your payroll office and show them the proof from ATO website ...

no no - you do get taxed, but you get 100% back after you apply for tax refund at the end of financial year ...

http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content....ntent/64131.htm I have seen this yet. I'm resident for tax purposes. Of course, I'm going to contact with the salary office, but I feel something really unexpected is going on.

Could you, please, give me the source? Anyway, taxes can't be so high for student with such a small amount of money!

my source is my personal working experience for a few years ... hehe ... take it or leave it ... Taxes can be so high if you are not a resident ...

<--- i dont think so... Average Aussies dont know these things, nor many accountants, they hardly deal with international people ... you have to tell them and asked them to get back paid ...

You were right, Muk. They wrote me that I had had to fill the tax file number declaration form. But nobody told me that before! I was only for two months in Australia by that moment, how could I know? I mean, they had to tell me what papers I had to submit before I was hired. Anyway, they wrote me I have to apply for the refund in July and may be, ATO will return me this money. The point is I need the money right now. Damn bureaucracy.

<--- I understand what you are saying, but they cannot spent time and baby sit everyone... please understand... Do you really think some minor clerk in Uni's payroll will start doing something outside her responsibility and checking on people whether they familiar with legislations?

You will get back paid ... you just need to follow the processes ...

Also, another thing!!
- since you are an international student, you must apply for Medicare levy exemption. Get the form from Medicare. The thing is that now you are not eligible for Medicare, but the ATO still charges you for that!

I know, but it is very important thing! At least they could make a checklist, it is uni and many people have just came and know nothing about the rules. Moreover, I have got scholarship from Uni and I do not have to fill any taxation form for this, I could not imagine that something was different. I'm sure, I'm not the one in such a situation.
